It wasn’t until recently that I realized why I love old movies so much. It’s an opportunity to immerse myself into whatever world I’m viewing, and it inspires me to live a more romantic and beautiful life.
Interiors and Decor

All That Jazz, 1979
It’s amazing to me how the interior design and decor of a movie can really transport me into that scene. Sometimes, the feeling I get while watching a movie makes me want to emulate it. It could be a beautiful vase or flower arrangement, a piece of furniture, some artwork, a wine glass, a candlestick. I never know what’s going to spark something. Often times it’s just a feeling. A scene might feel calm, romantic, or grand, and it’s a feeling I would like create in my own life.

Basic Instinct, 1992
Sometimes just deciding to make subtle changes to my routine like eating by candlelight, or using my china and crystal can make life more special. It’s about celebrating the small moments as well. Table settings can be fun and experimental and a movie can inspire me to try something new.

La Piscine (The Swimming Pool), 1969

Primo Amore (First Love), 1978

Il Gattopardo (The Leopard), 1963

Il Bisbetico Domato (The Taming of the Scoundrel), 1980
I find that in today’s world we’ve lost the nuances of the past. We are rushed, disheveled, and stressed. Everything is instant gratification, cheap, and disposable. Watching old movies takes me back to a time of elegance and simplicity.

Belle de Jour, 1968
Interactions between the characters are intentional, calm, and almost ceremonial. Their manners are impeccable (even when arguing or disagreeing) and the way they stand and carry themselves is refined.
Fashion & Style
The women in old movies are so feminine and beautiful. Especially during the sexual revolution of the 1960’s, women could express their sexuality more overtly. They have a power about them. I like to be reminded of the power of femininity, since it’s sometimes difficult to feel that way. It’s a reminder that women are truly unique and amazing creatures.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, 1963
I also love the men in these movies. Even the ones who aren’t conventionally handsome have style and swagger. They are secure with themselves, and are dapper and chivalrous. Every movement is confident and intentional.

Plein Soleil (Purple Noon), 1960

Casablanca, 1942

I Wake Up Screaming, 1941
I have to say, I prefer the freedom and opportunities women have now, but it’s fun to imagine a time when women were ultra feminine and goddess-like. Knowing these movies are far from reality, it’s the fantasy I love to get caught up in.

The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, 1971

All the Colors of the Dark, 1972

Shampoo, 1975

Mystere (Dagger Eyes), 1983
I’m often inspired by a hair style or eye makeup. I take the parts that appeal to me and modernize them to convey the same feeling. The same goes with the fashion, as every era has its trademark and it’s fun to use specific elements to create an authentic look. I like to find inspiration somewhere other than the current trends and create my own sense of style.

Il Bisbetico Domato (The Taming of the Scoundrel), 1980

To Have and Have Not, 1944
The women in these movies know how to use their feminine power, and it’s fun to live vicariously through them. I also enjoy celebrating women’s beauty in all different countries and time periods.

Belle de Jour, 1968
Exotic Locations

Primo Amore (First Love), 1978
I could get lost in foreign films. Whether it’s Italy, France, Switzerland, or Africa, it’s so much fun to fantasize about living an exotic life. Each location is so unique and beautiful in their own right. Not one is more beautiful than the other, and each one inspires me to soak it all up.

The Revolt of Mamie Stover, 1956
Humans are incredible, and though we may look and sound different, we all still human. Watching these movies gives me the chance to live all of these characters lives, and sometimes I hold on to the pieces that inspire me.

Mississippi Mermaid, 1969
I hope this inspires you to take some time for yourself and see what sparks inspiration for you! It’s fun to romanticize your life, and make even the smallest moments feel special.
