Streaming services seemed like a good idea 10 years ago, but with rates increasing, new streaming platforms constantly appearing, and streaming fatigue rising, it’s feeling like we’ve gone too far. I think it’s time to bring back a relic of the 00’s – The DVD.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of streaming services. Of all the apps that I have, it feels like there’s never anything to watch. Even though I’m paying for subscriptions, I end up renting movies because the one movie I want to watch isn’t streaming. Plus, it feels like ads are sneaking into our subscriptions, they are tightening the user restrictions, and there’s always yet another platform appearing.
Approximately two years ago I started getting rid of all my DVD’s. A collection my sister and I, as roomies, worked hard to curate. We were classic millennials overwhelmed by clutter, heavily influenced by the Marie Kondo craze, and we thrived on getting rid of things. Little did we know that the pros of DVD’s actually weighed out the cons.

Pros of DVD’s
Don’t need the internet
Don’t need to purchase a streaming service
Can share with friends and family
Don’t freeze due to a bad internet connection
Are conversation pieces when displayed in the home (plus, it’s so much more fun than scrolling on an app for hours)
You literally have them forever
What you’re watching can’t be tracked
Thrifting DVD’s is good for the environment
You’re not dependent on a streaming service that keeps increasing in price
It’s retro, it’s cool
Supports local businesses (thrift stores, consignment stores, etc)
Cons of DVD’s
Literally nothing – what were we thinking?
Ok, I guess there were some cons which is why I threw out 3/4 of my DVD’s to begin with. They take up space and I got tired of moving them around. But you know what? Sticking it to the man feels worth it. (Sorry, Jeff Bezos, you’re not getting that extra $4.99 from me)

If you’re like me and really love movies, searching for DVD’s and building your collection is such a fun hobby. Lately, I’ve been keeping an ongoing list of movies to look out for when I’m thrifting, and it’s so much fun when I find it. It’s like a “treasure hunt” as we say in my family. Plus, thrifting them keeps people’s rejected DVD’s from ending up in the land fill.
In this internet streaming world, anonymity feels good. Maybe I don’t want there to be a trace of every online decision I make… or maybe I’m just another millennial trying to feel alive. Whatever the reason, join me in this DVD revolution and drive over to the thrift store and purchase some DVD’s for less than the price it costs to rent them.

You should get into Korean dramas, there is an endless supply of those! And since it’s all subtitles you can count it as reading!
Ohhhh I like the sound of that!
I agree completely!
